Short answer: A machine that will not spin is often unbalanced, still full of water, or has a lid switch, belt or motor problem.
Common causes
- Unbalanced or overloaded drum. The machine pauses to rebalance.
- Water still in the drum. A drain problem stops the spin.
- Lid or door switch. The machine will not spin if it thinks the lid is open.
- Worn or loose belt in a top load machine.
- Motor, capacitor or control board fault.
What to check
- Remove a few items and spread the load
- Check that the drain is working, and clean the drain filter
- Close the lid or door fully
- On a semi-automatic machine, check the dryer lid is shut
