Washing Machine Care: Drum Cleaning, Detergent and Hard Water
Published 7 October 2026 · Repair Centre Kota
Short answer: Clean the drum monthly, use the right amount of detergent, leave the door open after washing and clean the filter. Hard water scale can damage heaters, pumps and sensors.
Monthly routine
- Run an empty hot cycle with a machine cleaner or as your manual advises
- Wipe the door seal and the detergent drawer
- Clean the drain filter and inlet filter
- Leave the door or lid open after use to dry
Detergent: use less than you think
Too much detergent leaves residue and suds, which strain the pump and cause smell. Front load machines need a low-foam detergent made for them.
If you have hard water
White scale on taps and kettles is a sign of hard water. The same scale builds up inside the machine. Use a descaler as your manual allows, and consider a filter or softener at the water inlet.
Avoid overloading
Respect the kg limit on the machine. Overloading strains the motor and bearings and causes shaking.
Smell from the drum
A musty smell comes from damp residue. Clean the seal, run a hot cycle and keep the door ajar.
