Washing Machine Not Draining: What to Check
Published 7 October 2026 · Repair Centre Kota
Short answer: Water left in the drum usually means a clogged drain filter or hose, or a failed drain pump.
Common causes
- Clogged drain filter. Coins, lint and threads collect in the filter, usually behind a small panel at the bottom of a front load machine.
- Kinked or blocked drain hose. A bent hose or a blocked standpipe stops water from leaving.
- Failed drain pump. You may hear a hum without water moving, or hear nothing at all.
- Lid or door switch problem. Some machines will not drain or spin if they think the lid is open.
- Control board fault. Rarely, the board does not send the signal to the pump.
What you can check safely
- Switch off and unplug the machine before touching anything
- Check the drain hose for kinks and blockages
- Place a tray and clean the drain filter if your machine has one
- Run a spin-only cycle to see if the water goes
When to call a technician
If the water still does not drain, or you hear a loud humming from the pump, call a technician. Never open the door by force while the drum has water.
