AC Gas Refill: What Customers Should Know
Published 7 October 2026 · Repair Centre Kota
Short answer: AC gas is not a fuel and is not used up. If the gas is low, there is a leak, and a refill without fixing the leak only works for a short time.
Signs of low gas
- Weak cooling even with clean filters
- Ice on the thin pipe or indoor coil
- The compressor runs for a long time without cooling the room
- Oily marks at pipe joints
What a correct refill involves
- Find the leak with a pressure or leak test
- Repair the leak
- Remove air and moisture from the system with a vacuum
- Refill to the correct pressure or weight for your AC
The type of gas is printed on the outdoor unit's label. Newer ACs commonly use R32 or R410A, and older ones use R22.
Questions to ask the technician
- Which gas does my AC use and how much was added?
- Where was the leak?
- Can I have this in a written bill?
Why repeated top-ups are a bad sign
If your AC needs a refill every season, the leak has not been fixed. This wastes money and can damage the compressor.
