Which AC Tonnage Do You Need? Room Size Guide for Kota Homes
Published 7 October 2026 · Repair Centre Kota
Short answer: As a rough guide, a 1-ton AC suits a room up to about 120 sq ft, 1.5 ton up to about 180 sq ft and 2 ton up to about 240 sq ft. In Kota's heat, choose the next size up if the room gets direct sun.
Room size and AC capacity
| Room size | Suggested capacity |
|---|---|
| Up to about 120 sq ft | 1 ton |
| About 120 to 180 sq ft | 1.5 ton |
| About 180 to 240 sq ft | 2 ton |
| Above 240 sq ft | 2 ton or more, or two units |
These are approximate. Ask the dealer or installer to confirm for your room.
When to go one size higher
- Top-floor rooms or rooms under a roof that heats in the sun
- Rooms with west-facing walls or large windows
- Kitchen-side rooms
- Rooms used by many people or full of electronics, such as hostel and PG rooms
If the AC is too small or too big
A unit that is too small runs all the time, cools weakly and wears out sooner. A unit that is too big switches on and off often, cools unevenly and does not remove humidity well.
Inverter or non-inverter
An inverter AC adjusts the compressor speed instead of switching it fully on and off, so it usually uses less power when run for many hours. It costs more to buy, and its control board costs more to repair.
Before you buy
- Measure the room length, width and ceiling height
- Check where the outdoor unit can be fixed and how long the pipe run will be
- Ask how installation is charged and whether a stand or extra pipe is included
