AC Water Leaking from Indoor Unit: Causes and Fixes
Published 7 October 2026 · Repair Centre Kota
Short answer: Water dripping from the indoor unit usually means a blocked drain pipe, a dirty filter or coil, or a unit that is not level.
Common causes
- Blocked drain pipe. Dirt, algae or insects block the pipe, so water backs up and drips.
- Dirty filter or coil. Poor airflow makes the coil freeze, and the ice then melts and drips.
- Unit not level or pipe slope wrong. The drain pipe must slope down and the unit must tilt slightly towards the drain side.
- Cracked or loose drain tray. Water spills out of the tray instead of into the pipe.
- Low gas. Low gas can freeze the coil, and the melting ice causes dripping.
What you can check safely
- Switch off the AC and clean the filters
- Check that the drain pipe outside is not bent or blocked
- Look for ice on the coil, and if there is ice, run the fan mode until it melts
When to call a technician
If the dripping continues after cleaning, or there is ice again, call a technician. Water near the electrical parts needs prompt attention.
