TV Lines or Patches on Screen: What They Mean
Published 7 October 2026 · Repair Centre Kota
Short answer: Lines often come from a loose panel cable or a T-con board, while dark patches usually mean panel damage.
What the pattern tells you
| What you see | Common cause |
|---|---|
| Vertical coloured lines | Panel ribbon cable, T-con board or source driver |
| Horizontal lines | T-con board or gate driver |
| Dark or black patches | Panel damage, often not worth repairing |
| Bright cloudy blotches | Uneven or ageing backlight |
| Flicker | Power board, backlight or cable |
| Half the screen dark | Backlight strips |
A quick test
Open the TV's own menu. If the lines show on the menu too, the fault is in the TV and not in the cable or set-top box. Also try another HDMI cable and input.
Is it worth repairing?
Lines and flicker are often fixed with a board or cable repair. Dark patches and cracked panels can cost close to a new TV, so ask for a quote before you decide.
What not to do
Do not press the screen or pry the frame. This can crack the panel.
