TV Has Sound but No Picture: Causes
Published 7 October 2026 · Repair Centre Kota
Short answer: Sound with no picture usually points to a failed backlight or power board, not necessarily the screen.
Common causes
- Backlight failure. In a dark room, shine a torch at the screen. A faint picture means the backlight has failed.
- Power board fault. The board that feeds the backlight is not supplying power.
- T-con or mainboard fault. The processing boards are not sending a picture to the panel.
- Wrong input or loose cable. The TV is on the wrong source or the cable is loose.
- Damaged panel. This is a physical panel fault and is often not worth repairing.
What you can check safely
- Press Source or Input and try another input
- Check HDMI and other cables and plug them in again
- Switch the TV off at the wall for a few minutes and try again
- Shine a torch at the screen in a dark room and look for a faint picture
When to call a technician
If you can see a faint picture with a torch, the backlight or its power board needs repair. Call a technician and avoid pressing the screen.
