Repair or Replace? How to Decide for Your Appliance

Published 7 October 2026 · Repair Centre Kota

Short answer: If a repair costs more than about half the price of a comparable new appliance, and the appliance is old, replacing is often better. For a newer appliance with a minor fault, repair is usually cheaper.

Typical lifespan

ApplianceApproximate life
AC10 to 12 years
Fridge10 to 15 years
Washing machine8 to 10 years
LED TV7 to 10 years
Microwave oven7 to 10 years

These are approximate. Use and maintenance change them a lot.

When repair makes sense

  • The appliance is under about eight years old
  • The fault is a small part such as a capacitor, relay, filter, belt or sensor
  • The quote is well below half the cost of a new one

When replacement makes sense

  • The appliance is near the end of its life and has failed before
  • The fault is a major part such as a compressor, drum bearing set or a damaged TV panel
  • An older AC or fridge is using a lot of electricity
