Protect Your Appliances from Voltage Fluctuation and Power Cuts

Published 7 October 2026 · Repair Centre Kota

Short answer: Wait a few minutes before restarting an AC or fridge after power returns, use a suitable stabiliser or surge protector and unplug sensitive devices in storms.

After a power cut

  • Switch off the AC, TV and microwave at the switch so they do not take a surge when power returns
  • Wait three to five minutes before restarting an AC or fridge, because the compressor needs the pressure to settle

Stabilisers

  • Choose a stabiliser rated for the appliance's load, and do not go too small
  • Check your AC manual for the voltage range it works in, since some inverter ACs tolerate a wide range
  • Buy a reputable, ISI-marked stabiliser

TVs and electronics

  • Use a surge protector
  • Unplug the TV, router and set-top box during thunderstorms
  • Do not run an AC on a thin extension board

Wiring

Give the AC its own socket and MCB with proper heavy wiring. A loose plug or socket gets hot and can cause damage.

Signs of voltage damage

  • Appliances that trip or restart on their own
  • Bulbs that flicker
  • A burning smell
  • A dead appliance after a surge or power cut
