Microwave Sparking: Is It Safe?
Published 7 October 2026 · Repair Centre Kota
Short answer: Stop the microwave immediately. Sparking is usually caused by metal, but it can also mean damage inside the oven.
Common causes
- Metal inside. Foil, gold-rimmed plates, metal twist ties or a steel container can cause sparks.
- Damaged waveguide cover. Food splatter or burn marks on the small cover on the side wall can spark.
- Burnt or damaged interior. Chipped paint or burn marks inside can cause arcing.
- Grease build-up. Built-up grease and food can burn and spark.
What you can check safely
- Stop the oven and unplug it
- Remove any metal items
- Let it cool, then wipe the inside and the waveguide cover with a damp cloth
When to call a technician
If it sparks again with only a cup of water inside and the oven clean, stop using it and call a technician. Never run a microwave with nothing inside.
