Microwave Not Heating: Causes and What to Check
Published 7 October 2026 · Repair Centre Kota
Short answer: A microwave that runs but does not heat usually has a faulty door switch, diode, capacitor or magnetron.
Common causes
- Door switch or latch. If the door sensors do not register, the oven will not produce microwaves.
- Blown fuse. The oven may be dead or the display may work but nothing heats.
- High-voltage diode or capacitor. These parts feed the magnetron and often fail.
- Magnetron failure. The oven hums and the light and turntable work, but food stays cold.
- Transformer fault. The oven is dead or makes a loud hum without heating.
What you can check safely
- Make sure the door closes fully and nothing blocks the latch
- Try another socket
- Heat a cup of water for one minute to confirm whether it warms
When to call a technician
Do not open the cover. A microwave stores dangerous high voltage even when unplugged. Call a technician.
