Fridge Too Much Ice in Freezer: Causes
Published 7 October 2026 · Repair Centre Kota
Short answer: Heavy ice build-up usually means warm air is getting in, or in a frost-free fridge, the defrost system has failed.
Common causes
- Door not sealing. A worn gasket or an overfilled fridge lets humid air in, and it freezes as ice.
- Frequent or long door opening. Humid air forms frost faster, especially in the rains.
- Defrost heater, timer or sensor fault. In frost-free models, the automatic defrost stops, so ice builds on the cooling coil.
- Blocked defrost drain. Melt water cannot drain and refreezes.
- Direct-cool fridges. These need regular manual defrosting, and some frost is normal.
What you can check safely
- Check that the door gasket is whole and the door closes fully
- Do not overfill the fridge
- Defrost a direct-cool fridge fully by switching it off with the door open
When to call a technician
